How to Install Red hat Linux

This article explains the installation of Red hat Linux 7.0. Before installing the Red hat Linux, make sure that you have the following equipment.

1. You ought to have manuals for your computer monitor. If you do not have these manuals then search the manufacturer’s site.
2. A notebook to keep record of the sections you have made.

Now you have to perform various tasks before installation of Red hat Linux.

1. Change your BIOS setting so that your CDROM is first in the boot sequence.
2. Make partitions of your hard drive using fdisk or any other partition-making program. You will need at least one partition for the installation of Red hat Linux. The size of the partition (to be used for storing Red hat Linux installation) should be at least 2GB

 

Installation Steps
Installation steps are as follow

1. Insert the “Disk” in the CD drive and restart your machine.
2. Now you will see a welcome screen and a series of startup messages like” “Anaconda, the Red Installation tool is starting up”
3. Next screen will ask you to choose the installation mode. Press “Enter” to start the graphical installation or “text” to start the installation of Red hat Linux in text mode. There will be two more modes “Rescue” mode and the “Expert” mode. Expert mode is for more advanced users and rescue mode is used if you want to fix a previous installation. Default mode is a graphical mode and it is recommended for most of the users.

4. After making the selection, Anaconda probes your card and monitor. After a successful probe you would shortly see an “X” and divided screen.
5. Now select a language. The default language is “English” then click “next”.
6. Select the type of keyboard and mouse. Most of the times the mouse has already been detected but some times the installation use a generic mouse setup.
7. In the next screen you would be given the installation type. You will be provided four different types of installation.
Workstation it is better for a new user
Server it erases all the partitions on the disk
Custom For the geeks
Upgrade it is used to upgrade previous version of Red hat Linux with a new one

Select the one, which meets your requirements.
8. The next screen gives you a choice of portioning the Hard disk. Choose the one, which you required.
9. In next step you will be asked to enter the “IP address”, “Hostname”, “Primary DNS”. If you don’t have a network you can skip this section.
10. You will be asked now to select the “time zone”.
11. In the next step, you will be asked to give a root password and add a least one user. The password should be minimum 6 characters long.
12. The next step is the configuration of your monitor and video card. Be careful at this moment because a wrong selection may damage your monitor. You should use “auto detected” feature at this time.
13. Now you can sit back and relax as the Red hat Linux gets installed. Normally it takes 20-30 minutes or depending upon your machine.
