Click “Add” and then select the “TCP/IP Protocol”, If the TCP/IP Protocol is not already installed. Configuration of TCP/IP involves assigning an IP Address,Hostname and a Network Mask to a given network interface. Use the pull down list to choose the Adapter you will use from the “IP Address” tab. The network administrator will explain whether you have to use “DHCP” or a “static IP address”. If you are using a static IP, then you are required to enter the appropriate values for Subnet Mask. IP Address and Default Gateway.

Now your are required to defin a “Name Server IP Address” or making entries in the “Hosts file” that is used on the local machine. After making the entries, name Servers translate host names into IP Addresses when you query on a particular host name. The Host file also gives this same functionality, but in a non network participating manner. The Host file can be modified or edited by using a text editor of your own choice. For example, the file is located in:

“C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” in Microsoft Windows NT where “C:\winnt” is your Windows NT system root.

You must configure the TCP/IP in order to use DNS. To use a Name Server,. Click on the “DNS tab” and then enter a “Host Name” and “Domain Name”. These values can be taken from Network Administrator. Now click the “Add” button below the “Domain Suffix Search Order box” and then enter the IP Address of the “Name Server”. Here you are given the flexibility that you can enter up to three name servers. After entering the name server, click “OK”.

When the gateway and the server are on the same machine and you want to configure them locally then you may desire to use the loop back address. which is typically "localhost" or "loopback” in the Hosts file is the name given to the IP address “127.0.0.1”. You can reduces the amount of network overhead by handling the traffic internally and Using the loop back address without actually talking to the network. The gateway can be configured for TCP/IP by using the “initialization file parameter”. this parameter would be set to the Side Information Profile name in an SNA configuration. This parameter should be set to the IP address or Host name of the server In a TCP/IP configuration. At the end it is followed by the Service Port number of that server.
