How to troubleshoot the Router?

There are many reasons and ways of data loss on a router based transmission. Troubleshooting a router is not a very difficult task. But just by reading this article you can troubleshoot the router by yourself without having some huge prior knowledge of routers and their protocols.

Now if your router fails to respond or you cannot access your network connected with that router then the possible steps that can be taken are:

  • Check the connections of the router
  • Check the terminals of the router
  • Adjust the router’s antenna properly
  • If using internal antenna check by attaching external antenna
  • Change location of router
  • Change the position of the access points
  • Monitor the strength of the signal by the monitoring device
  • Check if correct ip address are assigned or not
  • Check whether the routing table is up to date

Now starting from the connection, check whether the physical connection is fine or it is interrupted somewhere. Check all the connection points and service points to ensure that there is no physical connection mistake.

After checking the connections just go to the end terminals and check the setting at the receiving terminals. Proper configurations are mandatory at the ends. Check the configuration properly by the help of software commands.

Check whether the router is not physically displaced. And All the access points are within the range of the router. You can fix the problem by changing the place of either the router or the access points.

If you are using the router having an internal antenna then you can use an external antenna with that to increase the range and performance of the router.

Monitor the strength of the signal of the router. And if the signal distorts or loses at certain point then identify those points.

Most importantly, check whether the ip address are configured properly both at the terminals and the router end.

Check that routing table is up to date. Up to date routing information is very essential. As if the routing table is not up to date then whole of the routing process gets collapse. And the data is not transmitted. So check for proper routing table, the addresses of the receiving nodes, and timely updates from those terminals.
