Problem# Repair Windows 2000 if you are unable to boot into Windows
Solution:
When your system does not boot in Windows 2000 or in safe mode:
Let’s begin the process to repair the boot problem in Windows 2000:
- Enter the bootable CD of Windows 2000 in your CD-Rom. Please make sure it is the same version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer.
- Before the Windows logo appears, you will be asked to press any key to boot from CD.
- You will see a blue screen will appear and will begin loading XP setup from the CD.
- Push F8 button on key board to continue.
- Windows setup will find existing Windows 2000 installations.
- You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation or install a fresh copy of Windows 2000.
- If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.
Problem# when you start the Computer in Safe Mode
Solution:
If you want to solve the startup problems in safe mode, follow these steps:
- First step is restarting the computer.
- Push F8 when you receive the following message.
Please select the operating system to start
- Go to the Windows advanced option menu, you can use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and then press enters.
- If you are running other operating systems on the computer, press Microsoft Windows 2000 on the list that is displayed and then press enter.
After that you do one of the following steps that mention below:
- When your computer does not start in safe mode, check for possible hardware problems such as defective devices, installation problems, cabling problems, or connector problems. Remove any newly added hardware, and then restart the computer to see if the problem is resolved.
- When your computer starts in safe mode correctly, proceed to the next section to continue to troubleshoot the startup issue.
Error# “TLDR is missing” or “Press any key to restart” error message in Windows 2000
Solution:
To solve this error message use the recovery console
- First you install a latest revision for BIOS on the computer.
- Use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to restart the computer.
- At the Welcome to Setup screen > press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.
- Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the recovery console.
- Here type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair > enter.
- Type the Administrator password > press enter.
- Type map > press enter.
- Type the following commands, pressing enter after you type each one,
Copy drive: \i386\ntldr c:\
copydrive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
- If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y > enter.
- Type the following command, and then press enter,
type c:\Boot.ini
- If the Boot.ini file is missing or damaged, create a new one.
- Now save the file to a floppy disk as Boot.ini.
- Type the following command at the recovery console command prompt to copy the Boot.ini file from the floppy disk to the computer,
copy a:\Boot.ini c:\
- Type exit > enter.
- The computer restarts.
