Top Windows 2000 Professional Tips

This article explains Tips and techniques for Windows 2000 Professional.

  1. If you want to change the icons used for the Recycle bin, run the “Registry Editor” and then move to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\ {645F040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\Default Icon”

Now change the value labeled “full” and write the path to the icon file. Similarly change the value labeled “empty”. Empty is used to specify the icon for the empty recycle bin.

You can avoid a regular windows 2000 desktop permanently; you can even start without Command Prompt to do so start the “Registry Editor” and look for  “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/currentVersion/WinLogon”. Now double click on value named Shell, which is set by default to “Explorer.exe”. Then enter “taskmgr.exe” for the windows 2000 Task Manager. For a command prompt, enter “Cmd.exe”. And close the “Registry Editor” and log off the system.

  1. Windows 2000 gives you option to compress and decompress directories and files on NTFS partition. Compression reduces storage requirements. In order to compress and expand files and directories, double click  “My Computer” or “Explore” then just right click on item, select “properties” and enable “compress” from the list of attributes.
  2. You can open the file by dragging and dropping on the “Run dialog box”. Click “Start”, “Run” then drag and drop a file or application onto it form “My Computer” or “Explorer”. The complete pathname appears in the “Run dialog box. Now simply click “OK” to launch the file.
  3. Windows 2000 installation disks can be recreated. Format three floppy disks and CD in CD drive. From the Run dialog box, browse to the “i386” folder on the CD-ROM and then choose “winnet32.exe” and click “Open”. Change the Run command similar to “d:\i386\winnt32/ox”. Now click “OK”.
  4. Start menu delay can be changed in displaying sub menus. Run “Regedit” and locate “HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Control Panel\Desktop”. Alter the value for MenuShowDelay to any number between 0 and 4000.
  5. Default boot delay of 30 seconds can be changed. Simply open “Control Panel”, “System”, “Startup/Shutdown”. Now under the Show List, change the settings to the desired boot delay value.  You can bypass the boot menu altogether, set the delay to 0. If you dual boot between the Operating Systems using the Windows 2000 boot loader, do not set the boot delay value to 0.
  6. You can add command to any folder. Just open “Explorer” and click “View”, “Options”, “File Types”. Now locate desired Folder and click "Edit”. Click “New” to open the “New Action dialog box”. Now type “Command Prompt” in the Action box, and type “cmd.exe” in the Application Used to Perform Action box. To test it right click a folder and click “Command Prompt” to open a Command Prompt window at the folder's path.
  7. An Emergency Repair Disk is used to recover data from a damaged boot sector in windows 2000. In order to restore a damaged boot sector, reboot the computer using the “Setup disk 1”, followed by “disk 2” when prompted. Select “R” for Repair. From the next menu, select only “Inspect boot sector”. Now insert “disk 3” and follow the instructions on screen.
