The Registry is the  central hierarchical database used by Windows for the storage of information needed to configure a system for one or more users, applications, and hardware devices to name ‘some’ of the things stored. The registry is the central storage for all computer configuration data. This article describes that how you can take backup of registry in Windows XP.

 

How to take registry backup in Windows XP

You follow the given steps to take registry backup in Window XP:

    Press Start > press Run > type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe > press ok.
    • On the Welcome to System Restore page > press create a restore point >press next.
    • On create a restore point page > type a name for the restore point and then click create.
    • After the restore point has been created > press close.

     

How to take complete back up registry in Windows XP?

For the back up of complete registry or any particular registry subkey, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Start > click Run.
  2. A box open, type regedit and then press OK.
  3. Press the root subkey that contains all the child subkeys and values that you want to back up.
  4. On the File menu >press Export.
  5. In the Save in box > select a location where you want to save the registration Entries (.reg) file > type a file name in the File name box and at last click Save.

Using ERUNT to take a complete registry backup in Windows XP

You can use this utility as a primary registry backup utility, apart from System Restore.

To manually backup the entire registry using ERUNT, you follow these steps:

  • Go to the Start > Run and type the path to ERUNT.EXE in run box.
  • Then press OK in the next dialog.
  • Put a checkmark near all the three items and set the backup destination and press OK again.
  • You see entire registry is backup up. Click OK in the resulting dialog.

 

Complete registry backup in Windows Vista

You must follow these steps to take complete registry backup in Windows Vista:

  1. Go to Start button > type systempropertiesprotection in the Start Search box > press enter.
  2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  3. You just wait for Windows to search for available disks and most recent restore points. In the System Properties dialog box >on the System Protection tab > press Create.
  4. Type a name for the restore point and then press create.
  5. When you successfully completed all steps > click OK two times.
